Five
of our favorite search engine placement games are outlined here. Having
spent about a year as the primary Open Directory Project editor for the
Search Engine Optimization Firms category, I had ample opportunity to
examine over a thousand SEO-related websites. In that time I found some
interesting things. For example: 2. "Ranked for One Phrase on an Unimportant Search Engine" is a common search engine placement game. You wanted a positioning guarantee, right? You believed your site would be well ranked for its most important keyword phrase on Google. Instead, your site got ranked for its least important keyword phrase on the 35th most important search engine. Which, you will probably discover, fulfills the terms of the guarantee you sought. 3. "The Meta Tag Tweak Game": Another very common one. The word is out that Meta tag tweaking will get your site ranked high up. Actually, that information is way out of date, but many SEOs promote that service because you, Mr. or Ms. Business Person, probably heard somewhere that Meta tag tuning is the way to search engine placement success. Meta tags, such as the keyword tag, are virtually irrelevant. 4. "The You Can't Contact Me Game": If the search engine placement firm you are considering doesn't publish a phone number or business address, avoid them. Any reputable business ought to offer multiple ways of being contacted. I have seen many instances of SEO or submission services that only offer E-mail as a means of contact. What that means is you are limited in recourse if something goes south. And there is an excellent chance of things going south with outfits who wish to limit your access. When I ran the SEO category at ODP, I would not allow firms like that into the directory. 5. "The All Search Engines Are Important Game": Most SEO websites will not tell you is that there is very little point to putting effort into search engine placement on engines which have exceedingly small market share. Most SEO websites continue to claim that effort (and your money) must be expended on search engines that have clearly fallen out of favor. Fact: Google has overwhelming market share for search. That is where your money needs to be spent to get a return on your investment. To a great extent, to be perfectly frank, the rest of 'em don't much matter anymore. No
